Carrie Laws, Director, The Family Law Company
In this article for the Family Law Journal, Carrie Laws, a lawyer and director at The Family Law Company, discusses what steps the government should take in its upcoming strategy on tackling violence against women and girls (VAWG), following the news that more women in coercive and controlling relationships are being dragged into criminal activity by their abusive partners.
She highlights how the current system is failing to address the root causes of the issue, and draws particular attention to areas such as the deficiency in sex and relationships education for the under-16s and the chronic underfunding of domestic abuse charities, mental health services, and in the criminal justice system.
Carrie also explores the threat posed by new and emerging technologies such as deepfake and AI, and how any strategy to tackle VAWG must place technology at the “forefront.”
Overall, she advocates for major, radical change in what she warns could be “our last chance to finally get this right.”
