Women’s Aid highlights risks of online misogyny following Louis Theroux documentary on the ‘manosphere’

The domestic abuse charity Women's Aid has warned about the growing influence of online misogyny following the broadcast of a documentary by Louis Theroux examining the so-called “manosphere”.

Responding to the programme Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere, Isabelle Younane, Head of External Affairs at Women’s Aid, said the film provided an uncomfortable but important insight into the online communities that promote misogynistic ideas to young men and boys.

Younane said that while some influencers within the “manosphere” claim to offer guidance or strategies for personal success, the messages often include attitudes that promote hostility towards women. She added that the increasing popularity of online content promoting “trad wife” ideals, which encouraged women to adopt submissive domestic roles,  is also a concerning trend that reinforces harmful gender stereotypes.

According to research cited by the charity, young people who regularly view misogynistic online content are five times more likely to consider physical harm acceptable if the person responsible later apologises. Women’s Aid said such attitudes demonstrate how online narratives can shape beliefs about relationships and acceptable behaviour.

The organisation said relationships should be based on consent and respect, and warned that exposure to misogynistic messaging risks normalising harmful attitudes among young audiences.

Women’s Aid called on technology companies to take stronger action in moderating content and to ensure greater oversight of what is recommended to young users on digital platforms. At the same time, the charity emphasised the need for education to help young people understand what healthy relationships look like.

Younane added that misogyny underpins violence against women and girls and argued that challenging these attitudes is essential to building a society in which women and children can live safely.
